Meelup Regional Park and Friends of Meelup

Friends of Meelup is here to protect Meelup for the future. We are an independent group of people, founded in 2018. Our mission is to facilitate the conservation and promotion of Meelup Regional Park whilst encouraging community participation and education that ensures the long-term sustainability of the Park’s unique plants, animals and landscape.

We do this by focusing on lifting the profile of the park, seeking greater community engagement, raising funds to enhance the experience of visitors and helping with new research projects to ensure the park’s future.

Meelup Regional Park is a rare and beautiful piece of earth. It is located on Cape Naturaliste over 577 hectares extending from Dunsborough to Bunker Bay. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, high biodiversity values and home to many endangered plants and animals. The geology and geography is unique and it provides incredible recreational opportunities for nature lovers.

People have had to protect Meelup in the past. Had not a group of local citizens joined together to stop harbours being built, sand mining or a marina with attached property development, the Park would not be here today. The first development protests started in 1981 and continued until the early 1990’s when a public referendum run by the Council voted 9 to 1 against its development. Local members of Parliament supported the people and took it to Parliament. Meelup Regional Park became an ‘A’ class reserve on 11th May, 1993, and was gazetted on 7th June, 1995, which can not be changed unless by Parliament itself. People know it is special.

However, Meelup Regional Park still faces threats from nature and humans. Dieback, wildfires, feral animals and weeds still jeopardise our park. Humans can also impact the park by uncontrolled access including pets or by seeking uncomplimentary development. We need to protect our Park’s future.

As a member of Friends of Meelup (FOM) you will support our Park through:
