Volunteering is a great way to meet people. You can get involved in important projects to help conserve and protect our natural environment. There are many benefits of volunteering such as learning more about plants and wildlife, gaining new skills, being in the outdoors and socialising. Research has shown that volunteering, especially in nature, is great for your mind, body and spirt!
The Meelup volunteers are an active and very capable team supported by the City of Busselton's Meelup Environment Officer. The dedicated group of volunteers meet each week to undertake environmental activities in the Park including weed control, revegetation, removing tree guards, pruning trails, making rock gabions for erosion control, rare flora surveys, vegetation monitoring, visitor surveys and beach clean-ups. It's a great way to meet like-minded people and work together to actively conserve the environment. Support is provided by the City of Busselton with technical advice, project funding, training and the provision of insurance for volunteers.
In addition to this work, volunteers can also get involved in various projects during the year including the Annual Cockatoo count, Hooded plover surveys, Black cockatoo nesting hollow monitoring, Tangoroa Blue beach clean-up days, bird surveys, research projects, visitor surveys, public education and working with school groups. The volunteer work undertaken in the Meelup Regional Park is a huge effort from the local community who generously donate their time to contribution to environmental.
