Fishing & Boating
While fishing and boating can occur in the park, users should respect marine park zones and fisheries regulations
The rich coastal environment off Meelup Regional Park teems with life and provides fishers with a wide range of options, such as salmon, herring, whiting, skipjack and blue swimmer crabs.
Meelup Regional Park is located in the Ngari Capes Marine Park. The word ngari (pronounced ‘nyari’) is the Wadandi Noongar word for salmon. The Marine Park extends from the southern half of Geographe Bay to Cape Naturaliste, Cape Leeuwin and to Flinders Bay near Augusta. The marine park consists of five zone types: 'no-take' sanctuary zones, recreation zones, special purpose (shore-based activities) zones, special purpose (surfing) zones and a general use zone. Refer to the map below for descriptions of these zones.
Meelup Beach is located within the Eagle Bay Sanctuary Zone. Prohibited activities include fishing, water-skiing and freestyling on jet-skis; permitted activities include swimming, snorkelling, diving and driving a boat. The Eagle Bay Special Purpose Zone extends from Point Piquet to the southeast end of Eagle Bay. Shore-based fishing is allowed but fishing from a boat is not permitted.
Meelup Beach and Castle Bay are closed to motorised boats, as demarcated by the yellow buoys. An 8 knot limit extends for 300m offshore.
For detailed information on the zones and permitted recreational activities see the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions website. For information of local bag and size limits and fishing bans please see the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development website. With good management, Geographe Bay will provide sustainable fishing for future generations.
